In 1984, Rotarian Vim Kochhar, along with members of The Rotary Club of Toronto (Don Valley), was asked to help raise funds for the Cheshire Homes Foundation to support the construction of housing for individuals who are deafblind.
This effort led to the first Great Valentine Gala in February 1985. In 1987 its success inspired the creation of a separate organization to manage charitable contributions and continue this important work. As a result, the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons was established with a clear mission:
To support individuals with physical disabilities, raise awareness and recognize their contributions to society.
Now over 90 years young, Vim remains a respected leader and a driving force behind the foundation’s continued success. He has also played a key role in changing the way Canadians look at disability.
- Helped raise $85+ million over 40 years
- In 1992, built first home in North America for deafblind — new 56-unit building opening soon
